An album made up of three popular works and written by two famous Richards leads to an obvious single question: who is one Donald Runnicles? Since his appointment as music director of the San Francisco Opera in the early '90s, Runnicles has juggled numerous engagements across the globe. Trained as a répétiteur in Germany, his operatic experience is broad and big: he has a history with Berg's complex and intricate tale Lulu and has conducted Wagner's Ring several times. Named principal guest conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in 2001, his symphonic repertory grows all the time. In fact, this recording follows several recordings that have already garnered critical acclaim: a 2005 release of the Robert Levin completion of Mozart's Requiem and a Beethoven Symphony No. 9 from 2003. Both recordings are with the Atlanta Symphony. The Mozart Requiem disc also features soprano Christine Brewer, an American icon who complements Runnicles well with her deep and profound sense of Germanic romantic and post-romantic works. Strauss' masterpiece Four Last Songs is no exception: Brewer glistens as she brings subtlety and nuance to Strauss' word painting. Runnicles accompanies her with grandeur, gracefulness, and sublime sensitivity, bringing to the foreground many details that are all too frequently lost within this haunting score. The pair are equally as effective in Wagner's Prelude und Liebestod from Wagner's longing opera Tristan und Isolde. Here, Runnicles' yearningly slow tempo helps give Wagner's lush harmonies time to unfold and time for the ear to savor their deliciousness. Runnicles is a musician of the finest caliber, and it is in the best way that he does not dissuade his Atlanta musicians from overindulging from time to time. Nowhere is this overindulgence as exciting but in his rendering here of Strauss' Death and Transfiguration. Charged with energy, depth, and intellect, this is one of the finest modern-day accounts of this work ever recorded. Telarc's sound is naturally clear and deep, which makes for a riveting compact disc all the way around. If you aren't familiar with Runnicles or his work, you deserve to know both him and it. This recording is not to be missed.
