Toujours prêt à se remettre en question, Pat Metheny effectue ici un nouveau double salto arrière avec un album résolument hybride pour lequel il a convié cinq confrères tout aussi virtuoses que lui. Avec Road to the Sun, le guitariste américain a demandé à Jason Vieaux, maître contemporain de la guitare classique, de jouer Four Paths of Light, sa suite pour guitare. Pièce centrale du disque, Road to the Sun, une œuvre en six mouvements, interprétée par le Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (John Dearman, William Kanengiser, Scott Tennant et Matthew Greif). Enfin, Metheny, qui a conçu et arrangé l’ensemble, revisite seul avec sa guitare à 42 cordes, le Für Alina d’Arvo Pärt. Cette œuvre écrite à l’origine pour piano et qui referme l’album est un nouveau sommet d’épure pour son interprète qui excelle dans la note juste… Toutes ces escapades « classiques » ne sont pas ses premières et il avait enregistré notamment Electric Counterpoint de Steve Reich. Cette fois pourtant, le ton est plus savant et prend parfois sa source dans les œuvres de compositeurs comme Francisco Tárrega. La patte Metheny reste pourtant toujours là. Et sa palette de couleurs résonne à chaque instant dans ce disque qui fascinera tous les amateurs de guitare classique ou non. © Max Dembo/Qobuz
