Qui peut se targuer d’être sur toutes les lèvres en n'ayant sorti aucun morceau ? Pas grand monde. Vague éphémère ou avenir flamboyant, le temps le dira. Les cinq filles de The Last Dinner Party révèlent enfin Prelude to Ecstasy, un premier album flamboyant de bout en bout qui doit beaucoup à David Bowie et emprunte à Queen, Kate Bush ou Walt Disco. Abigail Morris (chant), Georgia Davies (basse), Lizzie Mayland (guitare, voix), Emily Roberts (guitare) et Aurora Nishevci (claviers) incarnent leur musique jusqu’au bout des ongles. Les corsets en soie et autres fards à joues habillent un glam rock proche des Nouveaux Romantiques où le théâtre vit pleinement.
Le décor est planté dès l’instrumental morceau-titre, dont la symphonie présage de vifs sentiments. Derrière, l’héroïque Burn Alive, avec ses envolées vocales, ouvre les vannes. Et comme il n'y a que pour s'habiller qu'elles font dans la dentelle, le reste est de la même trempe, qu’il s’agisse du tragique A Caesar on the TV Screen, de l’explosif Portrait of a Dead Girl et son solo de guitare, du piano de Sinner très Bohemian Rhapsody, l’hymne Nothing Matters ou My Lady of Mercy et ses chœurs aigus. Avec ses paroles universelles sur l’amour et le féminisme, ces mélodies polies par la brillante production du très en vue James Ellis Ford et un mix d’Alan Moulder ne peuvent que percuter les foules.
