Pour les fans hardcore de Miles Davis, l’intérêt de ce Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool réside essentiellement dans le 28e morceau du disque, Hail to the Real Chief, un inédit. Pour le reste, cet album est la BO du documentaire que le cinéaste Stanley Nelson Jr. a consacré au plus célèbre des jazzmen, sorte d’impeccable best of entrecoupé de propos des musiciens ayant travaillé avec lui tout au long de sa carrière… Difficile d’encager tout l’art de ce génie en un seul opus mais les novices (s’il en reste) pourront commencer leur apprentissage avec cette sélection allant de Donna Lee avec Charlie Parker (1947) à Tutu avec Marcus Miller (1986), en passant par les incontournables ‘Round Midnight (1957), Ascenseur pour l’échafaud (1958), So What (1959), Someday My Prince Will Come (1961) ou encore Footprints (1967).
