En cette année anniversaire (déjà 30 ans), l’exhumation de ce document a valeur d’aimant commercial en même temps que de fétiche pour aficionados à travers la planète. C’est qu’il s’agit là, ni plus ni moins, de l’ultime concert du prophète tiers-mondiste, pour lors en tournée promotionnelle de son album Uprising, et faisant étape finale au Stanley Theatre de Pittsburg, Pennsylvanie, le 23 septembre 1980, juste au sortir d’une série de deux Madison Square Garden new-yorkais illuminés par la grâce du skank jamaïcain.

A cette date, le cancer du chanteur à dreadlocks, déclaré en 1977, a hélas fait son chemin pour coloniser l’enveloppe corporelle de l’idole des déshérités (et autres terriens), d’ailleurs il a fait un malaise en joggant dans Central Park le lendemain de ses triomphes au Madison. Autant dire que Marley est loin d’être au mieux en arrivant à Pittsburg pour ce dernier concert dont il ignore encore qu’il sera, effectivement, radicalement, le dernier de sa jeune vie. Mais si le corps rue dans les brancards, l’âme, elle, est intacte, qui pousse l’artiste dans ses retranchements et le transfigure quand il interprète ses cathédrales « No Woman No Cry », « Jammin’ » ou « Is This Love ».

En version double, évidemment préférable en ceci qu’elle restitue l’intégralité du show, ce Live Forever témoigne donc du chant du cygne du Lion de Judée, certes moins fringant qu’en ses meilleurs jours, mais illuminé par son message et la force tellurique de cette musique qu’il a rendu immortelle. Proprement soutenu par des Wailers à la sûreté métronomique, avec la basse tendue, turgescente, les percussions claquant sec, les rythmiques en airain, Bob Marley se laisse emmener par ses hymnes déjà éternels quand il les pousse ce soir là, de toutes ses forces chancelantes, vers un public ému.

En manière de best of idéal en version live, Live Forever : The Stanley Theatre, Pittsburgh, PA, September 23, 1980, pour en reprendre l’intitulé exact, se clôt sur un « Get Up Stand Up » au message pour le moins troublant puisque cette exhortation à s’ériger contre toutes les injustices est l’ultime chanson jamais chantée sur scène par le rastaman modèle. Un final irrémédiable, le crabe emportant le lion quelques mois plus tard, le 11 mai 1981.

Cette trace historique autant que généreuse est donc restée scellée trois décennies, durant lesquelles l’étoile de Marley n’a jamais pâli. La délivrer au peuple à l’occasion de cette célébration en compte rond fera office de baume temporaire sur la crise du disque, et une messe du souvenir réécoutable à l’envi.

En cette année anniversaire (déjà 30 ans), l’exhumation de ce document a valeur d’aimant commercial en même temps que de fétiche pour aficionados à travers la planète. C’est qu’il s’agit là, ni plus ni moins, de l’ultime concert du prophète tiers-mondiste, pour lors en tournée promotionnelle de son album Uprising, et faisant étape finale au Stanley Theatre de Pittsburg, Pennsylvanie, le 23 septembre 1980, juste au sortir d’une série de deux Madison Square Garden new-yorkais illuminés par la grâce du skank jamaïcain.

A cette date, le cancer du chanteur à dreadlocks, déclaré en 1977, a hélas fait son chemin pour coloniser l’enveloppe corporelle de l’idole des déshérités (et autres terriens), d’ailleurs il a fait un malaise en joggant dans Central Park le lendemain de ses triomphes au Madison. Autant dire que Marley est loin d’être au mieux en arrivant à Pittsburg pour ce dernier concert dont il ignore encore qu’il sera, effectivement, radicalement, le dernier de sa jeune vie. Mais si le corps rue dans les brancards, l’âme, elle, est intacte, qui pousse l’artiste dans ses retranchements et le transfigure quand il interprète ses cathédrales « No Woman No Cry », « Jammin’ » ou « Is This Love ».

En version double, évidemment préférable en ceci qu’elle restitue l’intégralité du show, ce Live Forever témoigne donc du chant du cygne du Lion de Judée, certes moins fringant qu’en ses meilleurs jours, mais illuminé par son message et la force tellurique de cette musique qu’il a rendu immortelle. Proprement soutenu par des Wailers à la sûreté métronomique, avec la basse tendue, turgescente, les percussions claquant sec, les rythmiques en airain, Bob Marley se laisse emmener par ses hymnes déjà éternels quand il les pousse ce soir là, de toutes ses forces chancelantes, vers un public ému.

En manière de best of idéal en version live, Live Forever : The Stanley Theatre, Pittsburgh, PA, September 23, 1980, pour en reprendre l’intitulé exact, se clôt sur un « Get Up Stand Up » au message pour le moins troublant puisque cette exhortation à s’ériger contre toutes les injustices est l’ultime chanson jamais chantée sur scène par le rastaman modèle. Un final irrémédiable, le crabe emportant le lion quelques mois plus tard, le 11 mai 1981.

Cette trace historique autant que généreuse est donc restée scellée trois décennies, durant lesquelles l’étoile de Marley n’a jamais pâli. La délivrer au peuple à l’occasion de cette célébration en compte rond fera office de baume temporaire sur la crise du disque, et une messe du souvenir réécoutable à l’envi.
