Difficile de croire que ce premier album de pop folk à la saveur très californienne est l’œuvre d’un groupe qui deviendra l’une des locomotives du British Folk… En 1968, la grande Sandy Denny n’a pas encore intégré la formation londonienne et c’est l’oubliée Judy Dyble qui se charge de la partie féminine des voix. Des voix justement au cœur de ces premiers pas de Fairport Convention. Les harmonies vocales lorgnent avec brio vers celles des Mamas & The Papas, les guitares suivent les traces de celles des Byrds (l’extra-terrestre Richard Thompson pose ici les bases de son futur génie guitaristique) et une certaine ambiance psyché light fait pour sa part penser au Jefferson Airplane de San Francisco.
