Très intrigante proposition ! Le chef américain Robert Treviño ouvre sa collaboration avec le label Ondine par une intégrale des symphonies de Beethoven, première excursion d’importance pour le label finlandais dans ce sommet de la culture symphonique occidentale, avec un orchestre scandinave de tradition, puisque l’Orchestre symphonique de Malmö fêtera en 2025 son centenaire. Traditionnelle, cette vision des neuf symphonies l’est sans doute : par sa couleur sonore générale, plutôt fondue, ou son legato assez soyeux, elle nous immerge volontiers dans des temps discographiques anciens, évoquant Herbert von Karajan ou Otto Klemperer. Devra-t-elle dès lors être négligée ?
Disciple de Leif Segerstam, David Zinman et Michael Tilson Thomas – ces deux derniers chefs ayant d’ailleurs beaucoup questionné le texte beethovénien, chacun ayant tenté une expérience de relecture notable, Tilson Thomas allégeant dans son intégrale CBS drastiquement les effectifs, David Zinman se fondant sur l’édition Bärenreiter de Jonathan Del Mar qui rétablissait de nombreux accents et phrasés défigurés par 150 ans d’interprétations parfois peu scrupuleuses – Robert Treviño propose des interprétations riches et précises sur le plan polyphonique, et témoigne d’un souci constant des équilibres sans jamais solliciter exagérément le texte. Lyrique, attentif à ce que chaque pupitre trouve sa bonne place dans la structure entière, Treviño élabore des dialogues dans un esprit chambriste, et l’inhabituel « concertato » au début du dernier mouvement de l’Eroica semble en être le manifeste. © Pierre-Yves Lascar/Qobuz
