Au point que certains comme Jacques Loussier, Keith Jarrett, le Modern Jazz Quartet, Dan Tepfer ou Edouard Ferlet, pour n’en citer qu’une poignée, ont abordé à bras-le-corps, et pour de bon, l’œuvre du cantor de Leipzig. L’option choisie par Brad Mehldau est hybride. Le pianiste américain ne signe pas ici un album de jazz à proprement parler – les fans de « Bach jazzy » peuvent rentrer chez eux direct – mais il mêle des thèmes de Bach (quatre préludes et une fugue) à des pièces personnelles et contemporaines ; comme des réponses intrigantes ou des jeux de miroirs aux œuvres originales.
L’exercice est d’autant plus intéressant qu’une partie de l’œuvre de Bach a pris la forme de l’improvisation. Quant à Mehldau, son style, mais aussi ses compositions, ont toujours renfermé des éléments faisant écho au compositeur allemand. On connaît la force rythmique de l’écriture de Bach qui plaît tant aux jazzmen. Mais ici, le pianiste a pensé son disque dans sa globalité, ne cherchant jamais à séparer ses œuvres de celle de l’autre. Le résultat est donc déroutant de prime abord (surtout pour ceux familiers des préludes et fugues d’origine) mais fascinant au fil des écoutes. Car After Bach n’est jamais un bluffant bombage de torse (Brad Mehldau n’a pas trop besoin de ça, sa virtuosité comme sa grandeur n’étant plus à prouver) mais plutôt une réflexion passionnante sur la vie d’une partition à travers les siècles. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
