Listeners may be quite familiar with Carl Maria von Weber's overture to his masterpiece Der Freischütz and well acquainted with his overtures to Euryanthe and Oberon; but the remaining works on this EMI Encore reissue are fairly obscure. The singspiel Abu Hassan, and incidental music for the play Preciosa have long been forgotten, except for their seldom-played overtures, which amount to little more than potpourris of the best melodies from those works. The concert overtures, Ruler of the Spirits and Jubel, while popular fare in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, are now rarely programmed. In these 1958 performances, Wolfgang Sawallisch and the Philharmonia Orchestra perform all the overtures with brilliance, excitement, and high Romantic drama, and their historic recordings still sound terrific thanks to EMI's careful preservation of the original analog masters and exceptional remastering in 1988. Yet aside from Freischütz, Euryanthe, and Oberon, which still endure because of their bold originality and constant representation in concert and on disc, Weber's other overtures are much less compelling and even uninteresting, except for the jolting quotation of "God Save the King" in the coda of Jubel. So this disc is a toss-up -- worthwhile for its three bona fide hits, but otherwise not essential listening.
