Tra Hollywood Africans, uscito a settembre 2018, e We Are, appena uscito, la vita di Jon Batiste è stata, per così dire, stravolta. Nel 2020, il cantante-pianista della Louisiana è stato inserito nella colonna sonora di Soul, il film d'animazione della Pixar diretto da Pete Docter e Kemp Powers, dando improvvisamente una grande visibilità a questo musicista, impegnato e virtuoso sia nei suoi album, dove fa lo slalom tra jazz e soul, che nel suo ruolo di direttore musicale del Late Show di Stephen Colbert, sulla CBS. Con We Are, Batiste ci mostra il suo lato più groovy, e talvolta anche quello più pop, come nel singolo I Need You. Qui, rende più sfumati i confini tra jazz, soul, funk, R&B e gospel, dando un sapore speciale alle sue canzoni e al contempo seguendo le orme di big del passato come Marvin Gaye o Stevie Wonder. Una tendenza alla fusione stilistica che ritroviamo spesso nel DNA dei musicisti del sud degli Stati Uniti, in particolare della Louisiana! È anche un modo per puntare a una maggiore universalità e a un pubblico più ampio, senza però mettere da parte il suo impegno, come nella bluesy Cry. Anche nella scelta degli ospiti, Jon Batiste dimostra di essere molto esigente: su Show Me the Way troviamo la scrittrice britannica Zadie Smith ai cori, mentre su Mavis a fare la voce narrante è proprio la grande Mavis Staples.
