Quattro milioni di album venduti. Ecco dove si situano i Garbage dopo il loro primo disco. Il quartetto ha scelto di passare alla prova «difficile» del secondo album. Ma non è poi così dura per loro in fin dei conti, considerando che i Garbage sono il risultato di quattro solide carriere: tre produttori del Wisconsin, Butch Vigh (Nevermind dei Nirvana), Duke Erikson e Steve Marker che tirano fuori Shirley Manson dalla sua Scozia natia dopo un videoclip dei Angelfish– il suo vecchio gruppo– andato in onda su MTV alle due del mattino. Shirley ha otto album nel suo curriculum. Questo secondo dei Garbage è più ottimista. Il migliore, per loro. All’immediatezza di Garbage, Version 2.0 risponde con una poesia polisemica, un amalgama di emozioni più profonde, che si accumulano e si stratificano. Ci sono diversi livelli di lettura e un’estetica visiva scolpita accanto al videasta Andrea Giacobi che agisce come una persistenza della visione. Se Push It fa da ponte tra le due opere, il resto serve da approfondimento. Il quartetto studia i contrasti tra melodia e rumore, distorsione elettronica (Dumb, Hammering in My Head) e armonia pop (When I Grow Up, I Think I’m Paranoid che rimanda ai Beach Boys), ballate (Medication, You Look So Fine) e riff infuriati, sempre accompagnati da un certo gusto per l’originalità, la produzione impeccabile e la ricerca della canzone pop perfetta e delle coniugazioni future. Tra chitarre post-grunge, sperimentazioni noise, la voce distorta e il carisma singolare di Shirley Manson, i Garbage riescono in dodici pezzi a perfezionare il loro genoma.
