Since the success of his mixtape Life of a Dark Rose in 2018, Lil Skies has emerged as one of the commercial spearheads of the SoundCloud generation. But he had to take a step back to renew himself and release this second album, Unbothered. It was a question of getting out of a certain rut, and refocussing on something more audacious. This is in any case what he said over and over in interviews in 2020. Still, in appearance, the recipe has not changed much. The beginning of the album sees Lil Skies fall back in some ways, sorely lacking originality in its flows, themes and features: Lil Durk on the insipid Havin My Way, and Wiz Khalifa, a fellow Pennsylvanian, on Excite Me. Dead Broke, however, produced by Buddah Bless, does not save the first act. But Lil Skies did not come to enjoy such levels of hype by accident. He knows, now and then, how to show his talent, as he does on the title Locked Up. No reference to lockdown and the health crisis here, it is indeed a track about prison. A great single-take verse, no chorus: the rapper tells of the violence, the arms race ("I stay with the goons, I stay with the problems, we shootin' the AK"). And then, between his insolent desire to sell dreams to young groupies (on Red Wine & Jodeci) and the very palpable Chicago influences (on On Sight), he also knows how to recall melodies, especially with Sky High, one of the best tracks on Unbothered.
