Il 1985 fu uno degli anni più memorabili per Annie Lennox e Dave Stewart, segnato dal successo dell’album Be Yourself Tonight. Equilibrio perfetto tra elementi elettronici e un pop dal beat deciso che diventerà il loro marchio di fabbrica, quel disco conteneva varie hit come Would I Lie to You e It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back). Tuttavia, siccome ogni vittoria reca in sé l’incertezza della battaglia successiva, gli Eurythmics dovranno competere con la loro stessa creazione che faceva furore ovunque! Un anno dopo arriva il verdetto e bisogna ammettere che la sorpresa non è niente male. Allontanandosi dal synth-pop degli esordi, Revenge avrà un gran successo, entrando nella Top 10 inglese e diventando disco d’oro negli Stati Uniti. Il duo si orienta verso sonorità più anni ’60 e sforna un prodotto perfettamente in linea con lo stile radiofonico di allora, in cui l’arma letale resta la voce della Lennox nonostante il problema alla gola che aveva avuto poco prima.
Sono passati più di trent’anni da allora e pare si respiri una certa nostalgia per gli Eurythmics nei locali della Sony Music UK. Nel 2018, la casa discografica ripubblica infatti Revenge in versione rimasterizzata. Col volume a palla su Missionary Man, ci si accorge che i riff di armonica non sono invecchiati di un giorno e nemmeno quel beat anni ’80. Vero è che gli Eurythmics seppero sfruttare una gamma musicale relativamente ampia. Un rock molto British che si intona alla melodia del synth, assoli di sax, più il fascino vocale della Lennox. All’epoca, Revenge aveva portato gli Eurythmics fino in Germania, nello studio di Conny Plank, già produttore del loro primo album, In the Garden. Oltre ai successi Thorn in My Side e The Miracle of Love, questo sesto album chiude soprattutto una fase musicale del gruppo, che tornerà alla carica di lì a un anno con Savage. © Anna Coluthe
