Maurizio's M 4.5 functions as a continuation of the sounds originally released on the preceding record in the M catalog, M 4. M 4.5 rearranges the deep, bass-driven rhythms and strips away many of the foregrounded riffs, leaving only a simple high-hat percussion rhythm and a muted riff that fades in and out of the song endlessly. There are few changes at all throughout the 12-plus minutes of M 4.5; the song sounds almost like a locked groove. The repetitive nature of its endless loops gives M 4.5 a powerful, hypnotic quality that is capable of either mesmerizing listeners on the dance floor or putting them to sleep. The flip side, less than a minute long, strips away the bass beats, leaving only the phasing, high-pitched sounds.
