Due anni dopo Girl at the End of the World, il gruppo mitico di Manchester sembra non essere per nulla invecchiato con Living in Extraordinary Times. Semplicemente evocando il nome di James è tutta un’epoca che rinasce e la storia della sua memorabile carriera: quindici album, un suono Brit Pop tipico di quell’Inghilterra dei primi anni ʽ90 e soprattutto successi memorabili come Come Home, Sit Down, She’s A Star o ancora Laid… Nel 2001, la partenza del leader Tim Booth segnava la fine di quest’avventura cominciata nel 1982. Ma per tutti i fan, il gruppo riformatosi nel 2007 provocò due reazioni ben distinte. Da un lato, l’euforia, dall’altro, l’angoscia di ritrovarsi con dei vecchietti sul palco. Ma non è andata così. James funziona altrettanto bene che ai suoi esordi come lo dimostra Living in Extraordinary Times. Mai troppo timido, James comincia con Hank, un brano sul quale risuonano percussioni tribali e nel quale descrive tutto ciò che non funziona nell’America moderna. Uno, due, tre: ed ecco che comincia la lapidazione di Trump! Ma Booth non si dedica soltanto al linciaggio. Sensibile e onesto, si abbandona ad una dichiarazione d’amore paterno con Coming Home part 2, un seguito spirituale dell’enorme successo, Come Home. Iniziando con un beat elettronico, spiega la difficoltà di vivere lontano dai suoi cari, di perdersi alcuni momenti importanti della vita di un padre. Una lettera d’amore che commuove ancora di più con il videoclip semplice e autentico di Leif Tilden… James ha sempre saputo comporre successi di qualità per la radio che ronzano in testa. Un battito acustico e ottoni seguiti da un motivo elettronico al sintetizzatore, Many Faces ci trascina in uno stato di trance. Un crescendo prefetto che rivela i cori divini e trasporta in un aldilà.
