Vocalist Anita Gravine sings English translations to 13 songs associated with Italian film. The utter dullness of the recording is surprising, particularly in light of the all-star nine-piece backing, which includes drummer Danny Gottlieb, percussionist Steve Berrios, and avant-garde cellist Tomas Ulrich. Gravine's interpretations largely fail to inspire, although the lovely "Traveling Down a Lonely Road," from La Strada, hits the mark. Although this is billed as "Jazz and the Italian Cinema," there really is not much jazz here, despite the skills of the band. Most of the tunes are given surface treatment, and barely, if at all, hold much interest. Gravine does have an attractive sound, but it is not given an opportunity to shine in this setting. Trumpeter Greg Gisbert gets some space to stretch, but without much effect.
