In 2017, Holiday Destination brought Nadine Shah out from the underground, revealing an intriguing love child of PJ Harvey and Siouxsie and Anna Calvi. With that third album, the Londoner who was born to a Norwegian mother and a Pakistani father tightened the bolts of an indie rock that she delivered in a rather tense, borderline post-punk way, with angular basses, nervous but minimalist guitars and an almost free saxophone. Three years later, Shah has made her sound even more original with her heavy influences, notably thanks to her unique voice which has become deeper and deeper, hitting you from the very first minutes of Club Cougar, the brilliant opening track that sets the tone for the record. Even in her lyrics, the British singer stands out from her peers in her scathing introspection of the 30-year-old woman that she is, mocking societal pressures and sexism. Like on Ladies for Babies (Goats for Love) where she openly responds to the 90s Ace of Base hit, All That She Wants. Kitchen Sink is also more daring than its predecessors in its instrumental choices, less rock'n'roll and more atypical, especially in its impressive use of percussion which really spices up this beautiful album. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Il britpop in 10 album

“If punk was about getting rid of hippies, then I'm getting rid of grunge.” Fu con questa frase di Damon Albarn del 1993 che ebbe inizio la nuova invasione inglese sulla quella scena dominata allora dal grunge dei Nirvana e di Seattle. Il britpop fu profondamente legato alle politiche locali e all'identità dei suoi membri ed emerse proprio mentre entravano in scena Tony Blair ed il suo New Labour. Il romanticismo inglese ritrovò il suo fascino a discapito del concorrente americano, considerato ormai troppo superficiale nel Regno Unito dei primi anni novanta. Fate largo alla "Cool Britannia".

Obbiettivo la luna: The Dark Side Of The Moon

The Dark Side of the Moon, album-chiave dei Pink Floyd fu il risultato di un lungo processo creativo iniziato intorno al 1968. A Saucerful of Secrets (il brano principale dell'omonimo album) fu, almeno per Nick Mason, il punto di partenza. L'album successivo, Ummagumma (1969), diede a ciascun membro della band l'opportunità di creare un brano solista, anche se avrebbero dovuto unire i loro talenti per fare davvero il jackpot. I Pink Floyd hanno continuato a cercare il disco perfetto con Meddle, un album che ha messo in evidenza le loro abilità in studio, e Atom Heart Mother, prima del tanto atteso nirvana con The Dark Side of the Moon. E la perfezione di quest'opera non è stata intaccata nel tempo, nemmeno a quarantacinque anni dalla sua uscita.

Shoegaze, la quiete e la tempesta

Difficile mettere insieme due facce più diverse di quelle dello shoegaze, corrente rock che illumina l’Inghilterra all’alba degli anni ’90: un affascinante braccio di ferro tra chitarre violente e voci soavi. Dai precursori Cocteau Twins e Jesus & Mary Chain ai valorosi My Bloody Valentine, Ride e Slowdive, lo shoegaze è ancora in voga e sono in parecchi a far splendere le chitarre.
