Se David Bowie, Madonna, Diana Ross, Mick Jagger, Daft Punk e persino la francese Sheila lo hanno voluto al loro fianco, è perché le dita fatate di Nile Rodgers incantano sin dagli anni ’70. Un riff di chitarra chirurgico, una melodia implacabile, una produzione al top o un arrangiamento di gusto, il newyorchese oggi sessantaseienne sa fare di tutto. Nel suo curriculum fiume c’è però un rigo che lo contraddistingue, riassumibile in quattro lettere: Chic. Insieme al bassista Bernard Edwards, scomparso prematuramente nel 1996 a soli 43 anni, Rodgers farà danzare la Terra intera e definirà il suono di una disco funky estremamente influente che utilizzerà i codici della pop music. Con le hit Le Freak e Good Times, gli Chic scaleranno le classifiche e consacreranno il binomio Rodgers & Edwards come gli eredi di Holland-Dozier-Holland, Gamble & Huff e altri… Con It’s About Time che arriva nell’autunno 2018, Nile Rodgers, dopo aver prestato manforte ai Daft Punk, in particolare su Get Lucky, fa risuscitare quelle quattro lettere che non ornavano la copertina di un disco da Chic-ism nel 1992. Per celebrare questa rinascita, l’ultimo superstite degli Chic ha radunato star del calibro di Vic Mensa, Nao, Craig David, Elton John, Emeli Sandé e persino Lady GaGa. In quanto a repertorio, Rodgers propone brani originali tra cui inserisce una cover di I Want Your Love interpretata da GaGa. Sotto simile pioggia di stelle sfila soprattutto una pioggia di suoni. Come una colonna sonora adatta ai dancefloor di tutto il mondo, It’s About Time mescola disco pura, new jack swing anni ’90, elettro funk stile Daft Punk, jazz rock fusion vintage e R&B contemporaneo.
