Perché registrare un’ennesima Messiah di Haendel, si chiede Hervé Niquet, quando ce ne sono già centinaia sul mercato? E risponde così: è andato a cercare tra le numerose e variopinte versioni esistenti dell’opera, la versione molto interessante del 1754, con cinque solisti, ricomposta per essere rappresentata al Foundling Hospital (Ospedale dei bambini abbandonati, o altrimenti chiamato orfanotrofio) di Londra – luogo ove Haendel presentava il suo Messiah ogni anno dal 1750. Bisogna sapere che quando Haendel eseguiva una nuova produzione con nuovi artisti, aveva a sua disposizione dei solisti di valore irregolare. Si precipitava allora a rimaneggiare la sua partitura per adattarla alle forze e alle debolezze degli uni e degli altri. Quando ci interessiamo da vicino alle varie versioni che ne sono nate, notiamo che delle arie da Soprano sono state trascritte a beneficio di un Alto, che tale aria di Basso è dimezzata  - consideriamo allora che il cantante di un giorno doveva essere un po’ deboluccio. Siamo alle prese dirette con la realtà di Haendel, produttore delle proprie opere. Precisiamo che all’epoca, per vivere della sua musica, il compositore, che non usufruiva di alcun diritto, doveva assolutamente far eseguire le sue opere per raccogliere i benefici della serata. L’idea di non ritoccare la sua opera per non “sciuparla” o denaturarla è un’idea assolutamente contemporanea. Esisteranno sì e no una dozzina di versioni del Messiah; quella del 1754 è raramente eseguita perché esige cinque solisti: due soprani, un alto, un tenore e un basso.
