After the highly acclaimed indie rock album Beware of the Dogs in 2019 (released on Secretly Canadian), Stella Donnelly is back with Flood. In her previous album, the Australian songwriter combined her rebellious vocals with sarcastic lyrics to tackle burning topics amid the #MeToo movement (for example, she addresses rape culture in the well-known single ’Boys Will Be Boys’). However, in this new release, she shares personal stories in the first person. To capture this intimacy, the Perth native opts for an understated sound. She composed the entire album on her piano, and she uses this instrument to paint beautiful melancholic ballads (‘Underwater’ and ’Oh My My My’). However, she also brings in a bit of acoustic guitar (‘Morning Silence’) and saxophone (‘Medals’, which also features a few sunny “lalalala’s”). Stella doesn’t forget to spice up this cottony sound with perfectly seasoned tunes such as ‘Lungs’ (the opening track), ’How Was Your Day?’ (with its alternating spoken word and choruses sung in head voice) and ‘Cold’ (with much more insistent drums). By adjusting her winning bittersweet formula, Stella follows a similar path to her compatriot Julia Jacklin, though she remains decisively unique in the abundant Australian music scene. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
