Con Finding Gabriel, il pianista americano firma un album ambizioso e proteiforme che manda in frantumi le frontiere classiche del jazz. Già nel 2014, aveva firmato con il batterista Mark Guiliana un disco originale, Mehliana: Taming the Dragon, di cui l’annata 2019 è una sorta di seguito. Finding Gabriel è nato dopo la sua lettura intensiva della Bibbia; è da qui che deriva il riferimento all’arcangelo Gabriele del titolo… «Ho composto molti pezzi a partire dai sintetizzatori, con Mark Guiliana alla batteria, in base a un processo simile a quello di Taming the Dragon. Sono stati aggiunti alcuni strati e la voce umana è diventata un elemento importante, pur in assenza di parole, in quanto espressione pura d’armonia e emozione».
Sconcertante all’inizio, il risultato, ovviamente mistico, è affascinante e soprattutto pieno di idee. Dietro il pianoforte, i sintetizzatori (tra cui il Dave Smith / Tom Oberheim OB-6), il suo Fender Rhodes, e le percussioni ma anche– novità assoluta!– il microfono, Mehldau sprigiona una sinfonia di fiati, strumenti a corda e elettronici affiancandoli al jazz fusion (in alcuni passaggi fa pensare al Pat Metheny Group o ai Weather Report) nei quali la voce umana occupa un posto essenziale. Il pianista americano non è tra l’altro l’unico a cantare perché ha invitato perfino Kurt Elling, Becca Stevens et Gabriel Kahane. Inoltre, sempre per quanto riguarda gli invitati, troviamo la violinista Sara Caswell, il trombettista Ambrose Akinmusire, i sassofonisti Joel Frahm, Charles Pillow e Chris Cheek e il flautista Michael Thomas. Alla fine, Brad Mehldau firma un’odissea spirituale abbastanza originale, molto diversa dai suoi precedenti lavori in trio. © Max Dembo/Qobuz
