Dopo tre album con il nome di The Marcus King Band (Soul Insight nel 2015, l'omonimo Marcus King Band nel 2016 e Carolina Confessions nel 2018), il prodigio del Sud oggi si presenta semplicemente con il suo nome. A soli 23 anni, il ragazzo della Carolina del Sud ha sempre suonato in piena libertà: un vero e proprio artigiano, con il suo rock così blues e spiccatamente territoriale, con contaminazioni di outlaw country e di un soul intramontabile, in perfetto stile Atlantic/Stax. Non stupisce quindi che in El Dorado King giochi tra suoni affini a quelli degli Allman Brothers, dei Faces, dei Black Crowes, dei Gov't Mule, dei Tedeschi Trucks Band e di Exile on Main Street dei Rolling Stones. Per questa occasione ha invitato Dan Auerbach dei The Black Keys ad occuparsi della produzione, per potersi concentrare maggiormente sulla scrittura delle canzoni e sul loro potenziale commerciale. Lo spirito delle infinite jam session che fanno da sottofondo a una serata di placide bevute è come se fosse stato accantonato, a favore di canzoni più stringate. Tanto meglio: El Dorado è un fluire di lenti intensi à la Al Green (Wildflowers & Wine), più ballate uptempo (One Day She's Here) e successi country rock (Too Much Whiskey, un riferimento a Whiskey River di Willie Nelson). Marcus King ha la voce di un soulman stagionato, riuscendo ad evocare a volte l'età dell'oro di Rod Stewart con i Faces o John Fogerty dei Creedence Clearwater Revival. Inoltre, per infondere ancora più storia in questo album, King ha coinvolto il batterista Gene Chrisman e il pianista Bobby Wood, grandi nomi dell'American Sound Studio che hanno suonato con Dusty Springfield ed Elvis. La chitarra pedal steel di Paul Franklin fa addirittura una comparsa. Ma sotto questa valanga di suoni, influenze, nomi e toni dal sapore vintage che potrebbero rapidamente sommergere l'artista, Marcus King dimostra di possedere una personalità molto originale, una qualità che questo disco riesce a trasmettere con forza all'ascoltatore. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
