Dal momento che il polistrumentista e compositore Pacheco riteneva che le capacità di Celia Cruz fossero sottovalutate nell’orchestra di Tito Puente, le propose di produrre questo disco sotto i loro nomi. Un’offerta che la cantante cubana, la cui carriera andava allora a rilento, non poteva rifiutare, perché l’etichetta discografica Fania, diretta dal flautista portoricano e avvocato Jerry Masucci nel 1964, era la casa madre del recente fenomeno della salsa che annientava tutto al suo passaggio. I migliori musicisti delle comunità cubane e portoricane degli Stati-Uniti si erano riuniti sotto questa insegna che coniugava in modo succulento e piccante tutti gli stili latini. Percussioni pazzesche, trombe scoppiettanti, pianoforte elettrizzato, basso flessibile e molto cubano in perfetta sintonia portano la cantante e il flautista verso cime danzanti. L’album ricco di successi, Quimbara, Toro Mata o Canto a la Habana, rilancia Celia Cruz che vince il titolo di Regina della Salsa.
