La Seconda Sinfonia di Leonard Bernstein, «The Age of Anxiety», basata sull’omonima poesia di W. H. Auden, è un’opera di relativa gioventù del compositore-direttore-d’orchestra, poiché risale agli anni 1948-49 – giusto sulla trentina, quindi. La sinfonia si presenta come una serie di variazioni, ma non variazioni su di un tema iniziale. No: ciascuna variazione riprende elementi della precedente e la varia a sua volta, e così via. Si potrebbe parlare quindi di una forma di metamorfosi ininterrotta. Com’è facile immaginare, Bernstein mescola elementi sinfonici classici ed elementi di jazz, in particolare nella parte di pianoforte solo (qui tenuta da Krystian Zimerman, che ha avuto la fortuna di prodursi mille volte con Bernstein). A suo modo, è una specie di omaggio per il centenario della nascita del compositore, tanto più che, come indica Zimerman nel libretto, Bernstein gli avrebbe chiesto «se volesse avere la cortesia di suonare questa sinfonia con lui per i suoi cento anni».
