Nella sua concezione, l’enorme cofanetto di 119 brani recentemente pubblicato è un documento essenziale per comprendere il caso Joni Mitchell. Come il suo connazionale Neil Young con la serie Archives, su Archives - Vol. 1: The Early Years (1963 - 1967) la canadese ha raccolto cronologicamente le sue prime registrazioni, la maggior parte delle quali inedite e risalenti a prima del suo album di debutto del 1968, Song to a Seagull: demo, registrazioni dal vivo e trasmissioni radiofoniche del periodo compreso tra il 1963 e il 1967, tutte di buona qualità sonora.
