A 65 anni, David Byrne posa la bici (la sua ultima passione) per pubblicare il suo primo album da solista dopo quattrodici anni. Scritto a quattro mani con Brian Eno, suo partner storico col quale iniziò a lavorare all’epoca dei Talking Heads, American Utopia è uno di quei patchwork di cui solo Byrne conosce il segreto. Incrociare i generi, fondere i continenti e abbattere le frontiere stilistiche, sono tutte cose che l’ex studente della scuola di design di Rhode Island ha sempre avuto nel sangue. Dopo aver fatto punk funk, salsa, collage di elettronica, dischi con gente tanto diversa quanto Fatboy Slim e Annie Clark alias St. Vincent, musica per film e balletto e circa 12.547 altre cose, eccolo che torna a un format di canzone un po’ più classica, ma giusto un po’.
Le sue composizioni dall’essenza pop sono costantemente attraversate da lampi di elettronica, world e funk, e spesso flirtano con quelle del suo ex gruppo. Con la sua penna sempre così affilata e a volte controcorrente, David Byrne vuole inoltre credere che un’America diversa da quella di Donald Trump è possibile. Aiutato qua e là da «giovani» come Sampha, TTY e Happa Isaiah Barr degli Onyx Collective, sforna il suo disco solista più riuscito dopo tanti anni.
