Esistono molte versioni di Aci e Galatea di Haendel (persino una rimaneggiata da Mozart!), una bella confusione: ecco allora di che illuminare la lanterna del melomane. La prima riscrittura è una «piccola opera» (come la descrive lo stesso Haendel in una lettera) in un atto, cantata in inglese; la forma è quella del masque, ed è in tal modo che fu eseguita la prima versione nel 1718. Nel 1732 il compositore avrebbe rimaneggiato ed accresciuto la partitura per farne una serenata in tre atti, cantata in italiano. La presente versione, realizzata nel 1739, è l’ultima sintesi – nuovamente in inglese – e non contiene più che due atti. Era, nel 1718, la prima esplorazione del mondo lirico in lingua inglese da parte di Haendel, che si lasciò influenzare in buona parte da Pepusch e persino (molto) da Purcell – dopotutto quest’ultimo era stato sepolto solo da vent’anni, e le sue opere erano ancora la delizia di melomani e successori. Il trattamento ritmico e melodico così come la strumentazione sottolineano l’aspetto pastorale dell’argomento, ed il genio di Haendel nel cogliere le atmosfere dei suoi libretti per distillare una musica di grande finezza. I cinque solisti dell’incisione, il fior fiore delle voci barocche inglesi odierne, sono accompagnati dal grandissimo ensemble britannico The Sixteen (quattro dei solisti ne sono inoltre membri, attuali o passati) e dall’ensemble strumentale che fa parte integrante dei Sixteen; il tutto sotto la direzione vigile e spirituale del loro fondatore e direttore musicale Harry Christophers. © SM/Qobuz
