Al trentaseiesimo minuto, Accelerate è provocatoriamente difficile, è pesante nelle chitarre di Peter Buck e nei cori di Mike Mills, le sue canzoni non si lasciano trasportare, attaccano. Perfino le canzoni costruite sull'acustica appaiono come se fossero rockers, forse perché ricordano l'inquietante, traballante grazia di "Swan Swan H". Accelerate trova R.E.M. che si ricollega alla loro musica, con ciò che li aveva fatti suonare il rock & roll in primo luogo, invece di far tornare in vita un mito sbiadito.
