S’il ne fallait qu’une preuve de l’incroyable longévité et de l’immense popularité du genre, on retiendrait le parcours exceptionnel de Metallica. Nourri aussi bien par les piliers historiques du hard et du metal, de Deep Purple à Blue Oÿster Cult en passant par Thin Lizzy ou Motörhead, que par les groupes underground de hardcore, il est passé de répétitions acharnées dans son fameux garage (cf. Garage Days...) aux plus immenses stades et festivals de la planète. Et tout ça en plus de trente ans d’acharnement avec bien des records et des récompenses, mais aussi des sacrifices et des oppositions farouches. Avec près de 130 millions d’albums vendus dans le monde, Metallica est incontestablement le symbole d’une réussite qui ne doit rien à un quelconque formatage à l’instar de tous ces musiciens qui ont choisi une autre voie que celle du succès facile. Mais, aussi variés que puissent être les styles qu’il a abordés, du thrash speedé des débuts aux expérimentations pas toujours comprises de St Anger ou Lulu, il ne saurait pourtant résumer les innombrables courants qui se sont développés en plus de cinquante ans. Longtemps on s’est contenté des étendards hard rock ou heavy metal, mais, dès le début des années 80, certains optaient pour les couleurs à outrances du glam, pendant que d’autres se contentaient du noir absolu du black metal ou les brumes sinistres du death. Entre ces extrêmes, certains défendront une technicité d’élite, à travers le prog metal, pendant que d’autres reculeront les frontières de l’agression sonore via le grindcore, le metal indus, le doom, le sludge... Logiquement, des musiciens ambitieux ou téméraires ne manqueront pas de créer des ponts entre toutes ces écoles, ainsi le mathcore associera technique et agressivité, le metal symphonique réintroduira des influences classiques présentes dès Deep Puple, le rap metal creusera plus loin dans les influences du hip hop largement exploitées dans le néo (ou nu) metal, alors que le folk metal ira puiser dans le traditionnel celtique... Tant et si bien qu’avec tous les groupes hybrides qui apparaissent ces dernières années, on n’est pas près de s’ennuyer sur Qobuz aussi bien qu’au Hellfest, au Motocultor ou au Download Festival... © Jean-Pierre Sabouret/Qobuz
