Quatrième album du quatuor de Manchester mené par Matty Healy, 31 ans, « the enfant terrible of pop-rock » comme l’a étiqueté Pitchfork. Ce qui donne son intérêt principal à la musique de The 1975, c’est son habileté, à travers sa diversité et sa multiplicité, à ressembler à l’époque dans laquelle nous vivons. C’est sa force, mais aussi sa limite. Sur cet album au titre quelque peu prétentieux, Notes on a Conditional Form, on trouve ainsi réunis tous les styles, et l’on passe en quelques minutes d’une intro en spoken word anxiogène sonnant Laurie Anderson – en fait un speech alarmant de Greta Thunberg sur The 1975 – à un rock étrillé et cris punks sur People, puis un passage quasi classique voire BO de film New Age, The End (Music for Cars) avant d’enchaîner sur une piste totalement R&B, Frail State of Mind. Et ainsi de suite, dans une sorte de collage virtuose faisant ressembler cet album à un programme radio éclectique ou une playlist. 22 morceaux, près d’une heure et vingt minutes, cela peut sembler long. Mais la diversité de ce collage postmoderne aide à oublier que l’on écoute un seul groupe. Seul danger ? Une identité floue, disséminée dans la multitude. Groupe de musique électronique le plus influent de l’histoire, Kraftwerk, fondé par le duo Ralf Hütter et Florian Schneider, qui s’est éteint le 6 mai 2020 des suites d’un cancer, a toujours été en avance sur son temps. En avance sur la technologie, sur la composition, sur les performances scéniques, les Allemands ont prouvé au grand public que les machines étaient aussi capables d’émotions et ouvert la voie pour la techno, la new wave et même le hip-hop.

Le grunge en 10 albums

Il y a trente ans, Seattle devenait la capitale du rock. La faute au grunge. Cet esprit “sale” et je-m’en-foutiste né sur les cendres du punk, du heavy metal et du rock alternatif passa en un éclair de l’underground au succès mondial. Trop vite récupéré par un système qu’il reniait, le genre s’étouffa dans sa propre caricature à la fin des 90’s. Retour sur 10 albums qui ont marqué le mouvement.

Un nouveau monde entre électro et classique

Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Max Richter, Poppy Ackroyd, Peter Broderick, Joana Gama… Depuis quelques années, tous ces noms en vogue ont été regroupés sous la vaste et imprécise étiquette “néoclassique”. A dire vrai, cette “scène” ressemble plutôt à une bande hétéroclite d’artistes fureteurs qui mêlent instruments classiques et production électronique – avec une connexion assumée aux pionniers du minimalisme américain – régalant les sens et ouvrant des perspectives des deux côtés de leur spectre musical.
