Quatrième album du quatuor de Manchester mené par Matty Healy, 31 ans, « the enfant terrible of pop-rock » comme l’a étiqueté Pitchfork. Ce qui donne son intérêt principal à la musique de The 1975, c’est son habileté, à travers sa diversité et sa multiplicité, à ressembler à l’époque dans laquelle nous vivons. C’est sa force, mais aussi sa limite. Sur cet album au titre quelque peu prétentieux, Notes on a Conditional Form, on trouve ainsi réunis tous les styles, et l’on passe en quelques minutes d’une intro en spoken word anxiogène sonnant Laurie Anderson – en fait un speech alarmant de Greta Thunberg sur The 1975 – à un rock étrillé et cris punks sur People, puis un passage quasi classique voire BO de film New Age, The End (Music for Cars) avant d’enchaîner sur une piste totalement R&B, Frail State of Mind. Et ainsi de suite, dans une sorte de collage virtuose faisant ressembler cet album à un programme radio éclectique ou une playlist. 22 morceaux, près d’une heure et vingt minutes, cela peut sembler long. Mais la diversité de ce collage postmoderne aide à oublier que l’on écoute un seul groupe. Seul danger ? Une identité floue, disséminée dans la multitude.
