Pour leur troisième album, les Mancuniens de The 1975 n’auraient-ils pas accouché d’une certaine perfection pop et rock contemporaine ? Avec A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, Matty Healy, George Daniel, Adam Hann et Ross MacDonald réussissent à convaincre qu’ils sont tout sauf un boys band étiqueté « rock ». Leurs fans le savaient déjà. Les autres un peu moins… Et même si l’éclectisme qu’ils proposent ici peut faire peur, il est surtout le reflet de l’époque. Car lorsque le charismatique Healy ne fait pas la une des tabloïds britanniques pour son addiction à l’héroïne et ses cures de désintox’, il réussit à concocter de tubesques hymnes qui encapsulent l’ère du temps. De l’électro pop avec Autotune, du rock de stade à guitares, de la synth pop 80’s façon Thompson Twins/China Crisis, des mélodies attachantes comme chez Phoenix, des sonorités dubstep et des ballades folk futuristes façon Bon Iver, The 1975 picore à tout-va, digère en moins de deux et accouche dans la foulée d’une B.O. efficace qui ressemble à une belle tranche de vie, avec ses hauts et ses bas.
