Le magnétisme de sa voix charnelle est intangible. Elizabeth Grant alias Lana Del Rey peut susurrer le mode d’emploi d’un aspirateur sans fil, voire inviter la Terre entière à ses fiestas (A$AP Rocky, The Weeknd, Stevie Nicks et Sean Lennon sur Lust for Life, son album de 2017), elle déambule invariablement sur sa petite planète bien à elle faite de lenteur et de mélancolie. C’est sa manière de causer de son époque, de ses contemporains, de l’american dream et, tant qu’à faire, d’elle-même… Avec son titre choc, sa pochette à l’esthétique pop (avec Duke Nicholson, petit-fils de Jack Nicholson, à bord d’un bateau s’éloignant d’une côte en feu) et son tempo particulièrement lent (que des ballades, pas de titres uppercut), Norman Fucking Rockwell! offre un ADN plutôt folk. Une grande tenture sonore dans laquelle se prélasse la chanteuse, plus mélancolique et évanescente que jamais. Un disque qu’elle a surtout étroitement conçu avec Jack Antonoff, auteur/producteur chouchou des pop stars comme Taylor Swift, St. Vincent, Lorde, Carly Rae Jepsen et Pink, qui habille son spleen avec autant de sobriété que d’efficacité. Ovni de ce bel album au ralenti dans ce monde de brutes, une reprise de Doin’ Time (1996) du groupe Sublime (elle-même sorte de relecture du Summertime de Gershwin), preuve supplémentaire de l’originalité du cas Lana Del Rey, bien plus complexe que certains voudraient le laisser croire… © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
