Aunque su amor principal siempre fue el jazz, se desenvolvió a la perfección en otros géneros incluyendo el blues, el clásico, el soul, el folk, el R&B, el gospel e incluso el pop.
A lo largo de su carrera, Nina Simone grabó más de 40 álbumes, desde su debut en 1958 hasta alrededor de 1974. Su estilo más característico es una fusión de canciones gospel y pop con la música clásica. Su música fue muy influyente en la lucha por la igualdad racial en los Estados Unidos durante su época, y sigue siendo una gran inspiración para las generaciones más recientes.
