Con más de 100 millones de discos, Kenny Rogers fue uno de los artistas más vendidos de todos los tiempos. El tejano de pelo plateado conoció por primera vez el éxito en 1968 con el psicodélico “Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)” como miembro de First Edition, antes de embarcarse en una carrera en solitario que atravesó tanto el country como diversos paisajes más pop. La canción más conocida de Rogers, “The Gambler” de 1978, fue un éxito de crossover country en una época en que las líneas de género eran más rígidas. En 1983, se asoció con Dolly Parton (quien describió a Rogers como un “alma gemela”) para hacer un dúo en la indeleble “Islands in the Stream”. Aunque escrito por los Bee Gees con Marvin Gaye en mente, Rogers y Parton realizaron una maravillosa alquimia con el dúo, creando lo que los espectadores de la CMT votaron como el mejor dúo country de todos los tiempos. Kenny Rogers, tres veces ganador del Grammy (y 19 veces nominado) y miembro del Country Music Hall of Fame desde 2013, murió por causas naturales el 20 de marzo de 2020, a la edad de 81 años.
