Nacida al pie de las Smoky Mountains, al este del estado de Tennessee, una de doce niños criados en la miseria en una cabaña de un dormitorio, Dolly Parton comenzó a actuar (y a mantener a su familia) a la edad de 10 años. Se subió al escenario del Grand Ole Opry antes de graduarse de la escuela secundaria, y luego se mudó a Nashville para escribir canciones para gente como Skeeter Davis y Kitty Wells. Aunque no fue ella la que compuso su primer single de 1967, “Dumb Blonde”, con él marcó el tono de su actitud ingeniosa y su estética muy trabajada. También firmó con el empresario y músico Porter Wagoner, apareciendo en su programa semanal de televisión y grabando algunos duetos. Su carrera en solitario comenzó a despegar con “Jolene”, “Coat of Many Colors” y su primer número 1, “Joshua”. Pero fue su separación profesional del control de Wagoner lo que la llevó a escribir una de sus mejores canciones, la indeleble “I Will Always Love You”. Incluso cuando se adentró en el territorio del pop – con “Here You Come Again”, la exitosa película “9 to 5” y el dúo “Islands in the Stream” con Kenny Rogers – Dolly Parton nunca se alejó demasiado de sus raíces. Siempre ha estado ligada al bluegrass y a la música de los montes Apalaches.
