Steven Blier

Pianist Steven Blier is among the leading American song accompanists, and he founded the durable New York Festival of Song. He is also a prominent educator. Blier was born on November 25, 1951, in New York. As a child, he enjoyed the operettas of Gilbert & Sullivan and then became interested in opera and, finally, art song, once hearing a recital by soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. He attended Yale University, majoring in English literature and graduating with top honors, but he also studied piano on the side, taking lessons with Alexander Farkas. Blier moved to New York and went on for further piano studies with Matin Isepp, Paul Jacobs, and Janine Reiss. In 1989, he made his recording debut, backing baritone William Sharp on a recital of songs by Virgil Thomson, Paul Bowles, and Lee Hoiby, among others. He has remained a strong supporter of contemporary art song. In recital, Blier has accompanied a long list of top singers that includes Cecilia Bartoli, Jessye Norman, Renée Fleming, and Arleen Auger. He worked as a casting advisor at the New York City Opera and has been a frequent performer at U.S. festivals, including Wolf Trap and the Steans Music Institute at Ravinia near Chicago; at these appearances, he often seeks to encourage young singers. Blier is a musicologist who has written for Opera News and the Yale Review. He may be best known for co-founding the New York Festival of Song, which had its first season in 1988 and 1989; he remained its artistic director as of the early 2020s. The festival is notable for its wide range of repertory performed, including contemporary music and popular song. He has continued to record, issuing the complete songs of Charles Ives on the Albany label in the mid-'90s with various singers. In the early 2020s, Blier established the NYFOS label, affiliated with the New York Festival of Song. By 2023, when he issued the album Black & Blue on NYFOS with tenor Joshua Blue, his recording catalog comprised some 35 items. Blier taught at the State University of New York at Purchase from 1986 to 1994. He joined the faculty of the Juilliard School in 1992, remaining there as of the early 2020s.
