Perquisite

Amsterdam-born producer and cellist Pieter Perquin began creating music as a child, and was particularly influenced by classical, jazz, and hip-hop. He started Unexpected Records in 2001 while he was still a teenager, and released his instrumental debut EP, Outta Nowhere, featuring saxophone improvisations by Benjamin Herman, the same year. Double Vision, featuring clarinetist David Kweksilber, arrived the following year, mining similar jazz/hip-hop territory. Perquin formed hip-hop project North West Metropolis with some friends in 2003, and the group released one EP, Expressions, before splitting. Aruba-born MC Pete Philly guested on the EP, and the collaboration proved to be successful, leading to the formation of Pete Philly & Perquisite. The duo's Mindstate EP appeared on Unexpected Records in 2004, and the group spent over a year recording the full-length Mind.State LP, which was co-released by Epitaph and Unexpected in 2005, and featured a guest appearance by Talib Kweli. The album was an immediate success, and the duo toured with a live band across Europe, America, and South Africa. The duo won a Zilveren Harp, a prestigious Dutch music award, and received several nominations, including an MTV European Music Award. Remix album Remindstate appeared in 2007, while the group took a break to record its next full-length. Mystery Repeats arrived in September of 2007, and immediately topped the Dutch album charts. The group embarked on another successful international tour, received heavy airplay, and was nominated for numerous awards again, receiving the Amsterdam Award of Art in 2008. Perquisite and Philly decided to go their separate ways in 2009, touring one last time in October. During the same year, Perquisite recorded the soundtrack to the film Carmen Van Het Noorden, and the soundtrack was awarded a Golden Calf at the 2009 Dutch Film Festival. Perquisite's debut solo album, Across, arrived in 2010, featuring guest vocals by a variety of Dutch singers, including Cato van Dijck, Janne Schra, and Torre Florim. Perquisite began collaborating with soul vocalist Kris Berry in 2012, leading to full-length Lovestruck Puzzles in 2013, and extensive touring until the end of 2014. Perquisite continued scoring films and documentaries, including numerous collaborations with composer/pianist SliderInc, which were compiled on 2005 release Collected Works.
