Keith & Tex

Texas Dixon (b. 1948, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies) and Keith Rowe (b. 22 October 1950, Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies) first auditioned for Derrick Harriott in the late 60s, and the producer was so enamoured with their voices that he immediately took them under his wing and into his studio. Backed by musicians of the calibre of Lynn Tait and Hux Brown, they recorded two of reggae’s most enduring and versioned staples, ‘Tonight’ and ‘Stop That Train’. However, they faded into obscurity soon after these releases, although ‘Hypnotizing Eyes’ and a cover version of the Temptations’ ‘Don’t Look Back’ prolonged their career. Rowe went on to release ‘Groovy Situation’ for Lee Perry, but afterwards emigrated to the USA and joined the army, while Dixon relocated to Canada. The duo might well have languished in obscurity had it not been for rapper Vanilla Ice’s version of ‘Stop That Train’ in the early 90s. In its wake, Crystal Records put together an admirable retrospective package of early recordings, which, rather than bursting the bubble, served to reaffirm their legendary status.
