Fears

Rooted in minimal guitar, synthesizer, and drums, the sparse, sighing atmospheres of Fears are the creation of musician/producer Constance Keane. Also a member of post-punk outfit M(h)aol, she released her solo project's full-length debut, Oíche, in 2021. Still spectral but more collaborative, Affinity followed in 2024. An artist, fashion designer, and musician, Dublin native and London resident Constance Keane emerged with her solo project, Fears, in May of 2020. The self-released single "two_," a delicate song about experiences with self-harm, was issued in conjunction with the Northern Ireland Mental Health Arts Festival. The song resurfaced on Fears' first album, the self-produced Oíche (Irish for "Night"), which appeared on Tulle in May of 2021. In the meantime, Keane was playing drums for the feminist post-punk band M(h)aol (with singer/lyricist Róisín Nic Ghearailt, producer/bassist Jamie Hyland, guitarist Sean Nolan, and bassist Zoë Greenway), who released their debut EP, Gender Studies, the same year. Both debuts were met with acclaim from outlets like The Guardian, NME, and Irish Independent. As she toured Europe and the U.K., Fears gained a reputation for hypnotic live shows. The contrasting M(h)aol signed with Merge Records for their raw 2023 full-length debut, Attachment Styles. Back on Tulle, Fears continued along a personal, introspective path for her sophomore album, March 2024's affinity. Written, recorded, and produced by Keane, it included appearances by singer Ailbhe Reddy, trumpeter/singer Jemima Coulter, harpist Aga Ujma, and cellist Sophie Gwen Williams.
