Gucci Mane might have a favourite season… Three years (nearly to the day) after the solid mixtape Woptober, a sonic decompression chamber after the big return that was the album Everybody Looking, comes Woptober 2, a mini seasonal blockbuster from the iconic Atlanta rapper. We like the express version of Gucci Mane, when he locks himself in the studio for two days with a producer to produce a concise trap record (El Gato: The Human Glacier with Southside and Droptopwop with Metro Boomin) but you also appreciate when he takes his time to curate a real musical feast accompanied by handpicked guests.
New stars (and disciples) DaBaby, YoungBoy Never Broke Again and Lil Baby along with established names like Quavo, Kevin Gates and Kodak Black were clearly more than happy to share a mic with the Trap God. On the menu: a flurry of minimalist trap hits (Came From Scratch, Move Me, Wop Longway Takeoff), an airtight banger, which is the pièce de resistance of the album and strangely the opening track (Richer Than Errybody), ballads that employ brass (Highly Recommended) and piano (Opps and Adversaries), and an edgy track that pairs a 2 Live Crew sample with a salacious verse from Megan Thee Stallion (Big Booty). Of course, there is the usual lot of quotable punchlines (“You made the hood embarrassed but I made it legendary). Enough to satisfy us for the whole winter. © Damien Besançon/Qobuz
