The Definitive Collection, aunque no es tan completo como el excelente doble álbum recopilatorio Gold (publicado un año antes), es una visión práctica de la carrera de los Commodores, empezando con "Machine Gun" de 1974 y concluyendo con "Nightshift" de 1985. Los únicos éxitos Top 10 de R&B no incluidos aquí son "Sail On" y un par de cortes de finales de los 80, así que todos los grandes funk jams ("Too Hot ta Trot", "Brick House", "Lady [You Bring Me Up]") y las baladas ("Zoom", "Easy", "Three Times a Lady") están por supuesto incluidos.
