Fue una película con Maurice Chevalier la que inspiró a Sting las intervenciones silbadas de la adorable canción If It’s Love, pero también el espíritu general de su nuevo álbum The Bridge, publicado hace unas semanas. En Ámame esta noche (1932), de Rouben Mamoulian, como si de una enfermedad contagiosa se tratara (sigue mi mirada), la canción Isn’t It Romantic pasa de “voz en voz”, y acaba uniendo en la distancia a los dos protagonistas de la película, interpretados por “Momo” y Jeannette MacDonald. Es esta imagen de la música como puente (entre personas o entre dos fases de una vida) la que Sting refleja en este 15º álbum de estudio. Concebido durante la pandemia del Covid, The Bridge despliega retratos de personajes que viven pruebas más o menos dolorosas: desde el marido engañado en Loving You hasta un hombre entre la vida y la muerte en The Bells Of St. Thomas. Con su benevolencia y empatía, Sting construye puentes hacia un futuro liberador. Con su habitual rica paleta –jazz (el ternario de The Bells Of St. Thomas), pop rock (Rushing Water, que hará las delicias de los nostálgicos de Police) o folk (The Bridge, The Hills On The Border)–, el británico vuelve a revelar su incomparable sentido de la melodía a través de esta serie de “puentes sobre aguas turbulentas” que desafían a la adversidad. © Nicolas Magenham/Qobuz
