Nada menos que 22 años separan a On an Island de About Face, el disco anterior del guitarrista y cantante de Pink Floyd. En ese álbum Gilmour todavía estaba tratando de establecer diferencias entre su carrera solista y su banda, pero visto que en 2006 Pink Floyd ya había pasado a la historia, Gilmour no tiene inconvenientes en celebrar su legado. On an Island es una obra atmosférica y espaciosa que recuerda a clásicos como "Breathe", atravesada por la voz y el tono líquido de la guitarra de Gilmour. La gran diferencia es que las letras de Gilmour son tan plácidamente evocativas como su música, en las antípodas del pesimismo de Roger Waters.
