It’s a dark night, there’s a dog barking in the distance, you’re in a hut at the bottom of the woods, somewhere in the middle of Finland. Welcome to Mr. Lordi’s lair, the driving force behind his eponymous group. The man lives by two moral codes: hard work and determination. He never rests. Us poor humans only ever get to see one of his sides - the side that he wants to show us: a two-meter high monster with long brown hair, wearing a burnt skin costume and belting out catchy old-school hard rock. Lordi and his partners have been in our heads for so many years that it’s easy to forget for just how long. That is the precisely the concept album’s premise. Taking us back to the 70s, 80s and 90s, this “fictional compilation album” reveals songs that feel like old forgotten classics, songs which would have influenced the cult groups and albums we love today. The result? Surprises such as the track Zombimbo which sounds like it’s come straight out of the 80s, situated somewhere between Kiss and Eurythmics with that hard rock touch so dear to Lordi, or even Like A Bee To The Honey which comes from Paul Stanley’s unused archives from his solo career and rearranged with Jean Beauvoir (true story). Shake the Baby Silent seems to be a thinly disguised love letter to White Zombie’s early days with its heady chorus and deliciously dirty atmosphere. Killection is a wonderful nightmare, the kind we bury deep down but keep coming back to haunt us, whispering in our ears and encouraging us to succumb to them.
