No resulta nada fácil organizar un concierto excitante y, sobre todo, original en homenaje a un artista. Lo dicho viene al caso porque, el 7 de noviembre de 2018, una impresionante nómina de estrellas se presentaba en el Dorothy Chandler Pavilion del Los Angeles Music Center para revisitar la obra de Joni Mitchell y celebrar junto a ella su 75 cumpleaños. La influencia de la songwriter canadiense en una miríada de músicos de todos los pelajes es tal que la lista de artistas llamados a participar en la velada podría haber incluido otros mil nombres diferentes. Sea como fuere, los afortunados fueron en el caso que nos ocupa Chaka Khan, Diana Krall, Rufus Wainwright (en inmejorable forma), James Taylor, Seal, Graham Nash, Kris Kristofferson, Brandi Carlile, Norah Jones, Emmylou Harris, Los Lobos y Glen Hansard. Todos ellos, acompañados por una banda de altas prestaciones donde destacaban el batería Brian Blade (director artístico de la gala), el trompetista Ambrose Akinmusire y el guitarrista Greg Leisz, ofrecieron unas versiones quizá un tanto conservadoras pero lo bastante elegantes como para que el acontecimiento no sonara en exceso convencional y, por lo tanto, soporífero.
