Eduard Strauss was the younger brother of Johann Strauss II and Josef Strauss. Though he is plainly less popular today than his brothers, the opus numbers in the high 200s here attest that his music was heard plenty often in 19th century Vienna. This is the third volume of "A Centenary Celebration" on the Naxos label that began in 2017, just after the hundredth anniversary of Strauss' death. All the pieces but one are world premieres. There is not a tune here to rival The Beautiful Blue Danube, but the music is highly listenable. Eduard Strauss was a bandleader in addition to a composer, and the pieces here reflect the variety of dance music at the time, including not only waltzes but polkas of three different kinds, the elegant polka française, the more sedate polka mazur, and the peppy polka schnell (or "fast polka"). One of Strauss' biggest hits was the polka schnell Pegasus-Sprünge ("Pegasus' Jumps"), Op. 51, depicting a horse from Greek mythology. There are various curious titles: the Theorien ("Theories") Waltz, Op. 111, was written for a society of lawyers. The Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra Pardubice and conductor Marek Štilec return with characteristic straightforward performances; the music of the Strauss family has been done with more snap (notably at the Vienna Philharmonic's annual concerts), but there is something appealing and authentic about these clean, balanced readings. Anyone with the slightest curiosity about the totality of Viennese popular music should hear this release.
