Lael Neale

Singer/songwriter Lael Neale started out with a style that tangled together melancholic folk, sun-drenched country, and indie rock, putting her lilting voice at the forefront of gorgeous, sometimes twangy arrangements. After signing with Sub Pop and establishing a collaborative flow with producer and accompanist Guy Blakeslee, her subsequent albums embraced minimalism. 2021's Acquainted with Night stripped many of the songs down to their barest essence, and the sparse pop of 2023's Star Eaters Delight was created in a way that intentionally avoided digital recording methods. Neale was raised on a farm in rural Virginia before moving to Los Angeles to pursue a life in music. She worked with various musicians and producers, playing out and recording often, and releasing her first album, I'll Be Your Man, in 2015. Throughout her career, however, Neale struggled with the finished products of her studio creations, feeling like they were weighted down and sterilized by the standard pop arrangements. In 2019, she began experimenting with home-recording stripped-down songs on an Omnichord, a synth-like instrument with a unique but limited set of sonic possibilities. Some of these experiments were fleshed out with guitar, piano, and production contributions from Guy Blakeslee, and they slowly became the songs that would make up her 2021 sophomore album and Sub Pop debut, Acquainted with Night. Though recorded in 2019, the album was issued in February 2021. After the record's release, Neale returned to her family's Virginia farm at the dawn of the COVID-19 pandemic. Away from the big-city energy of Los Angeles and surrounded by the quiet of the country, she began writing new material that focused on exploring polar differences. Working again with Blakeslee in a production role, Neale created eight more thoughtful and spare songs that eventually constituted her third LP, Star Eaters Delight. Sub Pop released the album in April 2023.
