En 2023, la música soul tiende a dividirse en dos categorías. Por un lado, están los “revivalistas”, firmemente enraizados en las tradiciones de los años sesenta y setenta. Entre ellos se encuentran los grupos del interesante sello Daptone, como Thee Sacred Souls y The Budos Band, pero también St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Mayer Hawthorne y Durand Jones & The Indications... Por otro lado, hay artistas mucho más enraizados en el R&B, que envuelven su sensualidad en ritmos y producciones más contemporáneas, a menudo influidas por el hip hop. Desde pioneros del nu-soul como Erykah Badu y D'Angelo hasta la moderna Jazmine Sullivan, no hay mucho sabor retro en esta última... Gabriels no se decanta por ninguno de los dos campos. Le acompañan el multiinstrumentista y director de vídeos musicales británico Ryan Hope y el músico de formación clásica estadounidense Ari Balouzian. Una combinación que crea una fascinante mezcla de soul tradicional y sonidos 100% contemporáneos en su álbum de debut Angels & Queens. Por supuesto, el arma secreta de este estimulante y vigorizante Qobuzissime es su cantante. Lusk puede hacerlo todo. Puede desatar un incendiario falsete a lo Curtis Mayfield, llevar la tradición gospel, o susurrar como un amante poseído: ¡la tormenta vocal es total! Detrás de esta impresionante pirotecnia, también ofrece letras conmovedoras y personales, nunca sensibleras cuando son introspectivas, ni pontificadoras cuando abordan temas fuertes. Y si su voz es un imán, es también porque Ryan Hope y Ari Balouzian han creado el entorno perfecto para que brille.
