The Complete Budokan 1978 fängt einige von Dylans allerersten Konzertauftritten in Japan ein und ist für eingefleischte Fans eine unverzichtbare Aufnahme, für den Gelegenheitshörer ist sie faszinierend und kurios. Complete Budokan enthält das gesamte Material, das ursprünglich 1978 als Doppel-LP veröffentlicht wurde, sowie drei Dutzend zusätzliche Titel. Dieses liebevoll remasterte Album, das von den originalen 24-Kanal-Mehrspur-Analogbändern stammt, klingt weitaus knackiger als die ursprüngliche Veröffentlichung (insbesondere der Gesang). Anlässlich des 45. Jahrestages der acht Shows im berüchtigten Budokan-Auditorium, hören wir hier zwei Shows vom 28. Februar und 1. März 1978 in voller Länge.

Bob Dylan befindet sich zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme an einem besonderen Scheideweg seiner Karriere und ist in bester Verfassung. Das Album dokumentiert unseren Helden Mitte der 1970er-Jahre während seiner Wanderzirkus-artigen “Rolling Thunder”-Tour und ein Jahr vor seiner Konversion zum Christentum. Dylan zeigt sich von traditioneller amerikanischer Größe mit einer fast orchestralen Band und dramatisch überarbeiteten Versionen klassischer Songs. Einige dieser Arrangements scheinen besonders für moderne Ohren etwas schräg zu klingen. Die Zusammenstellung und Ausführung der Aufnahmen ist jedoch stets raffiniert. Den Höhepunkt bildet der umwerfende Song The Man in Me.

Es ist von Anfang an klar, dass dieser Dylan nicht von gestern ist: Mitreißende Leads auf Saxophon, Mandoline und Fiddle liefern die Gesangsmelodien zu A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall. Shelter from the Storm verfügt über ein langsames, reggaeartiges Tempo, ein Saxophon-Solo, das der E Street Band würdig ist, und die entzückenden Melodien wie sie von den Greatful Dead zu erwarten sind. Andere Songs erinnern eher an eine Vegas-Revue. I Threw It All Away verwandelt sich in einen vollwertigen Showtune, bei dem der Background-Gesang im Mittelpunkt steht. Man fragt sich, ob Tänzer für diesen Song auf der Bühne gewesen sein mögen, die die beschwingte, tango-artige Version von Love Minus Zero erzeugen. Gelegentlich kommen Flöten zum Einsatz, vor allem bei Mr. Tambourine Man, der anfangs nicht gerade überzeugend wirkt, aber uns spätestens nach dem dritten Mal hören direkt nach Jimmy Buffets “Margaritaville” führt. © Mike McGonigal/Qobuz

The Complete Budokan 1978 fängt einige von Dylans allerersten Konzertauftritten in Japan ein und ist für eingefleischte Fans eine unverzichtbare Aufnahme, für den Gelegenheitshörer ist sie faszinierend und kurios. Complete Budokan enthält das gesamte Material, das ursprünglich 1978 als Doppel-LP veröffentlicht wurde, sowie drei Dutzend zusätzliche Titel. Dieses liebevoll remasterte Album, das von den originalen 24-Kanal-Mehrspur-Analogbändern stammt, klingt weitaus knackiger als die ursprüngliche Veröffentlichung (insbesondere der Gesang). Anlässlich des 45. Jahrestages der acht Shows im berüchtigten Budokan-Auditorium, hören wir hier zwei Shows vom 28. Februar und 1. März 1978 in voller Länge.

Bob Dylan befindet sich zum Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme an einem besonderen Scheideweg seiner Karriere und ist in bester Verfassung. Das Album dokumentiert unseren Helden Mitte der 1970er-Jahre während seiner Wanderzirkus-artigen “Rolling Thunder”-Tour und ein Jahr vor seiner Konversion zum Christentum. Dylan zeigt sich von traditioneller amerikanischer Größe mit einer fast orchestralen Band und dramatisch überarbeiteten Versionen klassischer Songs. Einige dieser Arrangements scheinen besonders für moderne Ohren etwas schräg zu klingen. Die Zusammenstellung und Ausführung der Aufnahmen ist jedoch stets raffiniert. Den Höhepunkt bildet der umwerfende Song The Man in Me.

Es ist von Anfang an klar, dass dieser Dylan nicht von gestern ist: Mitreißende Leads auf Saxophon, Mandoline und Fiddle liefern die Gesangsmelodien zu A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall. Shelter from the Storm verfügt über ein langsames, reggaeartiges Tempo, ein Saxophon-Solo, das der E Street Band würdig ist, und die entzückenden Melodien wie sie von den Greatful Dead zu erwarten sind. Andere Songs erinnern eher an eine Vegas-Revue. I Threw It All Away verwandelt sich in einen vollwertigen Showtune, bei dem der Background-Gesang im Mittelpunkt steht. Man fragt sich, ob Tänzer für diesen Song auf der Bühne gewesen sein mögen, die die beschwingte, tango-artige Version von Love Minus Zero erzeugen. Gelegentlich kommen Flöten zum Einsatz, vor allem bei Mr. Tambourine Man, der anfangs nicht gerade überzeugend wirkt, aber uns spätestens nach dem dritten Mal hören direkt nach Jimmy Buffets “Margaritaville” führt. © Mike McGonigal/Qobuz
