Jusqu'à l'arrivée de Linda Ronstadt, à quelques exceptions près, comme Janis Joplin, les amateurs de musique rock et les musiciens ne considéraient pas la plupart des chanteuses comme de vraies artistes. Soudain, au début des années 70, une belle Mexicaine-Américaine est apparue avec un timbre vocal monstrueux. Élevée à Tucson et formée à Los Angeles, Ronstadt a été une force motrice qui a eu des idées très innovatrices sur le genre d'artiste qu'elle voulait être. Son don pour utiliser sa voix et son cœur pour extraire la tristesse des ballades était exquis. Enfin, elle a eu la chance de chanter et de faire des disques dans le sud de la Californie au bon moment, quand des compositeurs comme Jackson Browne, Lowell George, Randy Newman, Warren Zevon et d'autres débordaient d'énergie.
